Systematic Reviews:
Indicators of Review Quality

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are evaluated by N-CEP staff on the following six quality indicators.

  1. The review addressed a clearly focused question or aim
  2. Criteria for inclusion of studies are provided
  3. Search strategy is described in sufficient detail for replication
  4. Included studies are assessed for study quality
  5. Quality assessments are reproducible
  6. Characteristics of the included studies are provided
These indicators were developed in consideration of processes typically associated with the production of high quality systematic reviews to minimize bias and promote transparency. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses meeting indicators 2, 3, 4, and 6 (bolded above) have been determined to be of high quality as they do not contain major design or reporting flaws.
