Comparison of Speech and Language Therapy Techniques for Speech Problems in Parkinson's Disease
Herd, C. P., Tomlinson, C. L., et al. (2012).
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2).
|
Description
This is a review of randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of speech and language treatments in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD).
Conclusions
While limited by the number of studies and participants, preliminary findings from two studies support the "non-inferiority of online delivery of LSVT compared to traditional face-to-face delivery" (p. 12). Further research is warranted.

Assessing Disordered Speech and Voice in Parkinson's Disease: A Telerehabilitation Application
Constantinescu, G., Theodoros, D., et al. (2010).
International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, 45(6), 630-644.
Added: March 2012 |
Description
This randomized controlled trial investigates the assessment of speech and voice disorders in individuals with Parkinson's disease in an online and face-to-face environment. Sixty-one participants with hypokinetic dysarthria were evaluated simultaneously in online and face-to-face formats. In addition to reporting level of agreement between environments, patient satisfaction was reported.
Conclusions
Overall, participants were satisfied with telehealth service delivery. Thirty participants completed a participant satisfaction questionnaire, the majority of whom indicated they were comfortable with online session (57%) or very happy with the session (37%). Participants rated audio quality as adequate (30%) or excellent (40%) and video quality as adequate (33%) or more than adequate (30%).

Telepractice Supported Delivery of LSVT®LOUD
Theodoros, D., & Ramig, L. (2011).
Perspectives on Neurophysiology & Neurogenic Speech & Language Disorders, 21(3), 107-119.
Added: March 2012 |
Description
This article summarizes literature on the delivery of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) to individuals with Parkinson's disease in online format. Overall satisfaction with management of speech disorders with telehealth services is discussed.
Conclusions
The authors found high patient satisfaction with online delivery of LSVT LOUD across studies. Individuals reported a high degree of satisfaction with mode of delivery and savings in travel time. Participants also indicated use of this service delivery mode in the future.

Treating Disordered Speech and Voice in Parkinson's Disease Online: A Randomized Controlled Non-Inferiority Trial
Constantinescu, G., Theodoros, D., et al. (2011).
International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, 46(1), 1-16.
Added: March 2012 |
Description
This randomized controlled trial investigated the delivery of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) in face-to-face and online formats to individuals with Parkinson's disease. The article summarizes the experiences of individuals with mild to moderate dysarthria regarding their access to and satisfaction with LSVT delivered online and compares speech outcomes to those delivered in face-to-face environment.
Conclusions
Participant satisfaction with the online delivery of LSVT was comparable to face-to-face delivery of treatment. Overall, individuals with Parkinson's disease were satisfied or very satisfied with online treatment. The majority indicated that they were equally comfortable and happy with telerehabilitation services (47%) and rated audio quality as adequate (41%) or more than adequate (35%). Greater variability was reported for satisfaction with video quality.

Home-Based Speech Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease Delivered Remotely: A Case Report
Constantinescu, G., Theodoros, D., et al. (2010).
Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, 16(2), 100-104.
|
Description
This case study investigated the feasibility of delivering Lee Silverman Voice Treatment remotely to an individual with Parkinson’s disease.
Conclusions
The authors concluded that the patient demonstrated treatment gains in a number of perceptual measures of voice. The patient indicated high levels of satisfaction for treatment and indicated that “he would prefer online sessions to face-to-face for future management of his condition” (p. 102).

Evaluating the Feasibility and the Potential Efficacy of E-Learning-Based Speech Therapy (EST) as a Web Application for Speech Training in Dysarthric Speakers with Parkinson’s Disease: A Case Study
Beijer, L. J., Rietveld, T. C. M., et al. (2010).
Telemedicine and e-Health, 16, 732-738.
|
Description
This study investigated the feasibility and satisfaction of delivering e-learning-based speech therapy (EST) remotely to an individual with Parkinson’s disease. Performance was compared to no treatment.
Conclusions
After receiving 4 weeks of a web-based speech program which included components of pitch limiting voice treatment, the participant completed a questionnaire addressing satisfaction with telehealth service delivery. The author reported satisfaction with ease of use and ability to independently complete speech training in home environment. However, contact with speech-language pathologist was preferred.
